As one way of combating the effects of climate change in Kisoro
district, the Prime Minister of Uganda, Dr. Ruhakana Livingstone
Rugunda yesterday launched the Kisoro Go Green campaign in which every
household is entitled to plant two trees in their respective homes
Launching the campaign at Kisoro Mayors Gardens in Kisoro
Municipality, Prime Minister Rugunda said that human activities such
as cutting down of trees for charcoal, timber, and fire wood have
resulted into floods and landslides in Kigezi region after leaving all
the hills bared.
He asked locals in Kigezi region to support the campaign to restore
the green cover that no longer exist in most parts of the region.
Herbert Mugisha, the team leader Kisoro Go Green campaign while
speaking during the launch, revealed that the campaign is looking
forward to increase the green cover by planting 2 million trees in the
district by the year 2022 through initially people’s initiatives.
Mugisha said that they will hold a number of activities to support the
campaign such as Kisoro go green marathon, go green cycling challenge
and go green expo that will take place from 17 to 28th December 2017.
He added that they are going to start nursery beds at every sub county
with the help of Bwimndi Mghinga conservation trust and technical
support from national forest authority adding that the project will
later be extended to other districts of Kabale Rubanda and other parts
of the Kigezi region.

effectively counteracts effects of the climate change, protect and
enhance ecological diversity to support the development of local
communities through participatory governance and cooperate social
