The electoral commission has suspended the program for the LCI and II administrative units and the women councils and committee elections 2017.
According to press release, signed by the Electoral Commission Chairperson, Justice Simon Mugyenyi Byabakama that was released last evening, the commission’s decision to suspend the elections was in compliance with two court orders, issued by the High court in Kampala yesterday, which were deemed binding on the electoral commission.
High Court order followed an application by concerned citizen, James Tweheyo, challenging the elections in the absence of Advanced Secondary School students, who are currently sitting their examinations until 8th December. Accordingly the election for village women councils and committees were slated to take place today, while the administrative units of LC1 and LC11 were to take place on 21st of this month.
In the Press release, Justice Byabakama adds that any further steps by the commission on these activities will be determined by the outcome of the court process, of which the public shall be informed.
Byabakama appeals for calm among the political parties and organizations, candidates, agents and supporters and all other stakeholders as the matter is being handled by the High court.
