Police in Kabale district has in dentition four workers of BRAC Uganda Micro-finance Limited on allegation of detaining two of their clients at their offices in Kirigime over unpaid loans.
The suspects are, the manager of BRAC Uganda Microfinance Limited Kabale branch, Gloria Kyomukama, the Loans Officer, Ruth Niwaturiho, Shallon Kanyesigyire and Mellon Komugisha, all Credit officers.
According the Officer-in-Charge of Operations at Kabale Central Police station, Majid Alituha, the suspects are being held for detaining Consolanta Kyomukama and Merab Tukamuhabwa, all residents of Bubare Sub County in Rubanda district at the company offices at Kirigime in Kabale municipality. The victims had reportedly failed to repay the loans they borrowed from the financial service provider.
Alituha says that the suspects were arrested yesterday evening after police received numerous complaints that they have detaining their clients, who fail to repay their loans. He says that investigations into the matter are ongoing after the suspects will be charged accordingly.
Tukamuhabwa, one of the victims told our reporter that she arrested on Wednesday last week, after failing to repay a loan of 800,000 shillings, and detained at the financial provider’s office without food, until yesterday when she escaped and reported the matter to police.
