The Prime Minister of Uganda Dr. Ruhakana Rugunda has commended the Catholic Church in Uganda for establishing a strong foundation for the youth in National development.
Rugunda said that the Catholic Church has not only built cadres in the church but is also doing a great contribution in the promotion of pan Africanism.
“The Catholic Church has not only groomed young catholic youth in the church affairs but has also promoted good cadres who are the future of pan africanism. The church is therefore helping much the state in building patriotic Ugandans, “said Rugunda.
Rugunda said this on Saturday while speaking as the guest of honour at the closure of a five day National Youth Conference that was hosted by Kabale diocese at Rushoroza hill in Kabale municipality. It was attended by over 5000 youth from the 19 catholic dioceses in the country as well as others from the neighbouring countries like Rwanda and Democratic Republic of Congo.
The premier said that the biggest challenge that Uganda is facing is the fact that most people are engaged in subsistence farming which has limited their income levels.
“68% of the homesteads in the country are in a subsistence economy and they produce food compared to only 32% who produce for money. This has left most people poor. I appeal to religious leaders to join the fight against poverty eradication by encouraging Christians to go into agricultural production for money,” added Rugunda.
Monsqnior Silverio Twinomugisha the Kabale diocese Vicar General asked the government to fulfill the pledge that it made to the diocese of tarmacking the road to the diocese saying that it has been long since President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni promised that he is to tarmac the road.
“I am asking the government to speed up and tarmac the road as it promised to us because our transport to the cathedral remains unappealing despite the presidential pledge,” said Twinomugisha.
The Bishop of Kasana-Luweero diocese, Paul Ssemwogerere who was the chief celebrant said that the youth need to be given special consideration both in the church as well as in the political line for them to exercise their full potential.
Ssemwogerere later announced that the next youth conference is to be hosted by Nebbi diocese.
At the same function, Business tycoon Ceasor Augustine Mulenga the Vietnamese Consular General in Uganda donated 200 million shillings to Kabale diocese youth Sacco as way of helping the youth to get out of poverty.
Mulenga while making the donation asked the youth to change their mindset from wasting most of the time on social media sites like whatsapp and face book but rather be innovative.
David Bahati the state minister of planning said that the youth are the ones that are to liberate the country out of poverty by engaging in programs that are set by government like operation wealth creation, youth livelihood scheme among others.
“Our government has great hopes in the youth and that is why we keep coming up with programs targeting them. We believe that the future of this country is a brighter one if we have visionary youth,” said Bahati.
