Food prices in Kabale town shoot up

Prices of food stuffs in Kabale municipality have hiked as Christmas draws nearer. A kilogram of tomatoes has hiked from 1500 to 2000 shillings, a kilo of onions from 2000 to 2500 shillings, while a kilogram of green pepper has increase from 2500 to 4000 shillings. The price of a medium sized water melon has increased from 4000 to 6000 shillings.

Alex Muhumuza, a trader in Kabale central market says that when Christmas draws nearer, traders tend to hike prices to make money.

Peninnah Namanya, another trader in Kabale central market blames increase of prices of onions and Tomatoes to the fact that farmers have also increased the cost price. She adds that they have been a kilogram of onions and tomatoes at between 800-1000 shillings, but it has been hiked to 1200-1500shillings.

Aisha Kyomuhendo who deals in Matooke, says that a bunch of matooke that has been selling between 20,000 to 30,000 shillings has been hiked to between 35,000 to 45,000 shillings.
