Rwanda Disposes off Illicit Brew

About 3200 liters of locally made illicit brew was seized in a Police-led operation in Rulindo District, recently.

The psychotropic substances were d disposed of in Bushoki Sector presence of hundreds of residents as police and local leaders conveyed the message against the criminal practice.

The substances were seized from two distillers, who were operating illegal distilleries, according to Police.

The Mayor of Rulindo District, Emmanuel Kayiranga, while addressing the residents shortly after pouring the substances, warned them against the practice, but thanked those who continue to work with the Police to identify and arrest drug dealers.

“These substances are unhealthy, they pose a security concern to consumers because they are not tested, their content in not known and the raw materials as well as the hygiene in brewing it can cause harm to consumers,” Mayor Kayiranga told the residents.

The District police Commander, Senior Supt. Jean Bosco Rudasingwa, who headed the operation, reiterated the need for collective action and cutting the market.

He warned that only licensed distilleries are allowed to operate within the set standards by Rwanda Standards Bureau (RBS) that include raw materials used and packaging, among others.

“These are continuous operations against all drug related crimes including traffickers or dealers, and even consumers,” the DPC said, calling for continued partnership with the public and sharing information or drug traffickers and distillers of illicit drinks
