Leaders in Mbarara are calling for improved and sustainable means of utilizing wetlands.
The leaders who held a meeting at Mbarara district head quarters on Thursday revealed to forge a away forward on checking the continued depletion of the wetlands revealed expressed concern over the failure by locals in the district to use water bodies responsibly.
Charles Ngabirano the member of parliament for Rwampara County in Mbarara district revealed that while it is important for locals to utilize water bodies, they are being threatened by bad practices which he says must stop.
Ngabirano argues that there is need for the locals to strike a balance between their survival and the survival of the wetlands and other environment gazetted features.
Speaking at the same meeting, Tumusiime Bamuturaki the Mbarara district local five chairperson revealed that they are to take action against all those implicated in the depletion of water bodies.
He says that the locals must think about the future and not short term gains.
