Traders operating in the Garage street market in Central division Kabale municipality are accusing municipality authorities of failing to construct a drainage system to stop the market from flooding whenever it rains.
The market, commonly known as Owino, operates daily and hosts traders dealing several various items including: clothes, shoes ,fresh and dry foods and charcoal among other commodities.
The market accommodates atleast 300 traders and one of the major markets in Kabale Municipality.
Our reporter visited the market and found traders stranded without customers as the whole market was full of floods.
They however claim that whenever it rains the whole area floods, barring customers from accessing the market.
Scora Keburingi who deals in a shoe business says whenever it rains; they are out of business as a result of the flooding. She says customers are unable to access her stall, and asked the municipal authorities to intervene.
Jane Niwamanya, a food vendor says their customers now buy from other markets after it rains due to fear of the hygiene of the food stuff they sale in the market.
The Kabale Municipality Mayor, Emmanuel Sentaro Byamugisha admits that the market floods when it rains. He however says that he is going to discuss with the Central division Sam Arineitwe to see how they can improve the state of the market as efforts to construct it goes on.
