Police in Mbarara yesterday arrested and detained the self-styled king of Ankole and his 4 cabinet ministers for allegedly promoting sectarianism and inciting violence.
The arrested are Umar Asiimwe Ntale –the self-styled king, Max Muhumuza and Joseph Kankiriho together with Brenda Katushemerirwe and Wycliff Amanya.
Samson Kasasira the Rwizi Region police spokesperson says that his arrests follows the minister of gender, labor and social affairs directives stopping him from any activity related to the restoration of kingdom in Ankole.
Minister Janat Mukwaya last week while at Lake View Hotel in Mbarara the meeting Umar and his group advising the self proclaimed king to instead register himself as a traditional healer, other than claiming kingship for a kingdom which was banned in 1967.
On Tuesday this week, the king while at a press conference which was also blocked by police, said he cannot listen to the directive of the minister, saying ‘a muganda cannot tell Banyankole what to do’, statements that were partisan and led to him and his group being arrested.
Kasasira adds that investigations into the matter are underway.
