Ankole “King” Remanded

Prince Umar Asiimwe Rubambansi the Ankole crown claimant and his four ministers today appeared in court and were remanded to Kyamugonranyi government up to 27th of February .

Asiimwe was arrested on Thursday last week together with his cabinet ministers Max Muhumuza, Joseph Kankiriho, Brenda Katushemerirwe and Wycliff Amanya.

Appearing before mbarara grade one magistrate Sanyu Mukasa, the five were charged with a series of cases among them inciting violence, promoting sectarianism and impersonation.

Attempts by Prince Rubambansi and his group secure bail hit a dead end after the grade one magistrate Sanyu Mukasa the state was still investigating the matter and that the sureties presented were not residents of the area and may not be compelled to ensure that the suspects appear in court when needed.

State Attorney Caroline Kesubi had asked court not to grant the suspects bail on grounds that they faced a number of cases which had to be thoroughly investigated before court could pronounce it self on the matter.

Their bail application will resume on the 27th of February 2018.

Rubambansi has been running executing his duties as a self styled king of Ankole from his palace at Itaaba in Rwampara, Mbarara district Since 2016.

The prince has on several occassions turned down calls from top governmemt officials to close the palace saying that as the son of Ntare V former Ankole king, He is the right person and heir apparent to the throne.
