Police Battles Mob in Rukiga District

Police in Rukiga are battling angry local residents in the villages of Kantare, Bwasha and Kazoha in Rutengye parish Kashambya sub county who went wild after the death of an area resident after being allegedly assaulted.

28 year old Gilbert Asiimwe 28 a resident of Kantare village was assaulted on 25/03/18 on his way back home from Kikago trading centre where he had gone to buy a soda by Agaba Levi, Bryan Twinamasiko and John Ngamushaba who waylaid him.

Was rushed to Kisizi hospital where he was referred to Mbarara hospital and died this morning.

The case of assault had been reported and suspects arrested but when the locals learnt of his death this morning, they went and burnt two houses, cut down three banana plantations and took some domestic animals from the homes of the suspects.

Kigezi regional police spokesperson Elly Maate says that the Police on getting the information swiftly swung into action and prevented further damage.

Maate adds that police have also arrested two people who are believed to be ring leaders.

By press time, police was engaging the locals in a discussion on the way forward.

The case is registered under reference number CRB 232/2018 of Rukiga district.
