Rwandan Rushes to UN over Illegal Detention

Lawyers to former Rwandan Army officer Sgt Rene Rutagungira have petitioned the United Nations over what they refer to as Illegal detention.

Rutagungira, a retired army officer from Rwanda fled the country in 2004 over alleged persecution was picked up at Bahamas bar in 2017.

Currently detained at Mbuya Chieftaincy of Military intelligence headquarters, Rutagungira is accusing Uganda security officials of violating his rights.

He is accused of having coordinated the extradition of a former aide to Rwandan president Paul Kagame one Joel Mutabazi.

Mutabazi was picked up and later extradited to Rwanda way back in 2013 and faces terrorism charges.

According to a letter dated 9th May to the United Nations Human Rights Country Representative, His lawyers of Kizza and Mugisha Company advocates,Rutagungira has on several accessions had attempts to secure bail thwarted and also tortured in cells.

His Lawyer Eron Kiiza says that his client has been tortured, denied medical care and a chance to have justice,

He says that the petition is aimed at ensure that the family members and relatives are allowed access to client and family head.
