The inspector of courts Immaculate Busingye has expressed concern over crowded prison facilities in Mbarara that saying that the overcrowding is a security threat.
Busingye made the remarks on Friday while inspecting Mbarara High court , Kakiika( Kyamugoranyi) and Mbarara central prisons.
She noted that the prisons are overcrowded and not good for the health of prisoners and well as the staff working there.
She revealed that Mbarara central prison which is meant to host a total of 301 inmates is now hosting 1,000 inmates .
Busingye says according to statistics, most of these inmates are waiting trial urging judges and courts to work tirelessly and dispose off the cases before them.
She says that this issue should not be left to only Uganda Prisons Service alone but it should be handled at Justice, Law and Order sector (JLOS) so that it devise means on how it can be tackled.
