Rwanda Police Holds Six Over Possession of Cannabis

A Police operation in the Rwanda district of Rwamagana District seized 320 pellets of cannabis and arrested six people including two women.

According to the Eastern Region Police spokesperson Chief Inspector of Police (CIP) Theobald Kanamugire, the suspects were arrested on June 1 in Musha Sector, Kabare cell.

“We received information about some people that were selling pellets of cannabis, and we worked with residents and local leaders to identify and arrest them,” said CIP Kanamugire.

The Spokesperson identified the suspects as Delphine Nikuze, Jean d’Amour Hakizimana, Francois Habinshuti, Jean Baptiste Munyengango, Dieudonne Kanyarutoke, and Lidivine Mukarunanira.

He reminded that Rwanda National Police (RNP) puts much emphasis on fighting drugs to address security, health and overall concerns.

“Drugs are the major factor fueling domestic conflicts and gender violence, affect resource development and labour force,” said CIP Kanamugire.

Health experts say that some cases of heart, liver, kidney and mental problems have been attributed to abuse of narcotic drugs.

The spokesperson said that the arrested suspects have been handed over to Rwanda Investigations Bureau.

He appealed to the general public to report drug dealers in their communities so as to be arrested
