One person died on spot while 34 others were injured after lightning struck Muziza primary school in Bisheshe division of Ibanda Municipality on Monday.
The deceased has been identified as Asuma Ndyabahika a primary six pupil.
30 of the injured are pupils while the other four are teachers at the same school Most of the injured pupils are in primary seven.
Sources at the school indicate that the lightning struck late yesterday when they were having their remedial classes.
Johnson Kanyomozi the Bisheshe Division local council three Chairperson claims that the school had been fitted with fake lightning arrestors which were of no use.
Dozens of parents rushed to the school after the incident to check on their children. Ambulances from Uganda police and nearby health facilities and private vehicles were brought in to transport the injured for treatment.
Ibanda resident district commissioner Eliasto Atakuhebwa says that the authorities rushed to the school to evacuate the injured. He further revealed that the authorities have also commenced investigations into concerns that a contractor who recently handed completed structures at the school could have installed fake lightning arrestors.
The injured are receiving treatment at facilities which include Ibanda Hospital, Ibanda Family Clinic, Ibanda Comprehensive Medical Center and Ishongororo Health centre IV.
