Ntungamo Man Held over Theft of Number Plates

Police in Ntungamo district are holding one Hakiri Kadonya alias Boy on charges of stealing motor vehicle number plates.

The suspect currently being held at Rwahi Police post in Rwahi –Rwentobo Town council was arrested on Friday night as he called on of the victims demanding for money.

Kadonya had reportedly plucked off number plate UAT 732 K from a Toyota Premio belonging to an area resident only identified as Ali.

At the time of his arrest, the suspect had been surrounded by a mob that had threatened to lynch him.

Sources indicate that the cases of stealing motor vehicle number plates had become the order of the day with over four locals having their number plates plucked off and returned in exchange for money.

Those who had lost number plates include Julius Mbabazi Bitarabeho, Brian Mudidi and Jacob Bukwirwa.

A police officer who talked to our reporter on condition of anonymity revealed that the practice is becoming common in Rwahi-Rwentobo town council with as the thieves call the owners of the number plates demanding for money to have their plates released to them.
