Kigezi inter-religious council chairperson Rev.Fr,Gaetano Batanyenda has hit at police over what he described as hypocrisy and selective implementation of the COVID-19 directives.
Batanyenda who also doubles as the vice chairperson for Kick Corruption out of Uganda –KICK-U told our reporter today morning that he is dismayed by the manner in which the police are resorting to using teargas and arresting of a section of politicians especially those in opposition over holding gatherings.
Batanyenda says that the incidents where agents of state minister for finance David Bahati have been gathering locals and issuing out money as well as compromising the standard operative procedures have been over seen by police in Kabale and the Resident district commissioner.
He is also concerned about other gatherings that were held by National Resistance Movement –NRM bigshots among them Ephraim Kamuntu,Mike Mukula ,Jane Ruth Aceng among others where the police remained silent and did even bother to question their actions.
Batanyenda says that the harassing of opposition politicians in Jinja,Kampala among others area is a clear indication that the police has lost direction and joined partisan politics.
He also wonders whether COVID-19 only affects the opposition while those in the ruling party are immune to the virus.
Police spokesperson Fred Enanga however says that the police have already opened files investigating the rallies that were held by NRM leaders where standard operating procedures were compromised.
He however does not specify if any of the NRM leaders has been summoned of the actions that compromise public safety.
