Grace Ankunda Bwesigye, who has been contesting for the Kabale Ndorwa East constituency Member of Parliament NRM flag bearer, has said she will bounce back as an independent candidate citing election irregularities.

Ankunda has been the Ndorwa East constituency National Resistance Movement (NRM) Chairperson. In the election that was held yesterday, Dr Protazio Begumisa was declared the Ndorwa Constituency’s NRM flag bearer after getting 23352 votes defeating her closest challenger Grace Ankunda who garnered 9569 votes.

Others in the race were Kenneth Arinaitwe who scored 3942 votes and Derrick Ahimbisibwe who got 342 votes. Begumisa was declared the winner today by the Kabale district NRM registrar Mourice Keitaba Mugenga at Kabale Rukiiko hall in Kabale municipality.

Ankunda however, protested the results citing voter bribery, voter intimidation and violence especially in Nyakasharara and Kavu parishes which acts she said compromised thorough decision making of her voters. According to Ankunda, Dr Begumisa allegedly bribed voters with money ranging from 5000 to 50,000 shillings each according to the voter’s influence in community. Dr Begumisa also reportedly bribed parish registrars with 100,000 shillings each.

Ankunda also cited election irregularities like allowing under age voting, confiscation of her declaration forms at some polling stations by registrars among other irregularities. She also noted that her agents at Maziba Sub County polling station were chased by the sub county GISO and registrar, stopping them from participating in the tallying of the complaint’s votes.

She further revealed that she will contest as an independent candidate come 2021 general elections saying the NRM party has always failed to follow up and act against such irregularities in the party primaries.

Yesterday, there were NRM party primary elections for all Constituency and municipality Members of Parliament seats, and District Woman Members of Parliament seat.

Ankunda’s coming back as an Independent means she will face the incumbent Independent Ndorwa East Constituency Member of Parliament Hon Wilfred Niwagaba and the current official NRM declared flag bearer Dr Protazio Begumisa to battle for who shall represent the Constituency in Parliament after the February next year general elections.
