Rushenyi county member of parliament Mwesigwa Rukutana has been arrested by the counter terrorism police after he grabbed a gun from one of his body guards and opened fire at his opponents.
Sources from police indicate that the legislator who also doubles as the state minister for labor was picked by counter terrorism police and driven out of the area.
The minister reportedly opened fire at one Dan Rweiburingyi an agent of his opponent Naome Kabasharira who was travelling in motor vehicle registration number UAQ 840X.
The incident took place in Nyanga village, Nyanga parish in Rubaare sub county where the voting for the NRM party flag bearer for the parliamentary seat was postponed due to the disappearance of the party registers.
Rukutana can be seen in a video footage grabbing a gun and going ahead to open fire.Rukutana is currently trailing Naome Kabasharira in the race for the NRM parliamentary flag for Rushenyi county.
Naome Kabasharira told our reporter on phone that the minister has since the beginning of the elections been threatening and harassing her supporters misusing security personnel.
Rwizi regional police spokesperson Samson Kasasira says that the minister was arrested together with his three escorts on charges of inciting violence, attempted murder by shooting and malicious damage of property the suspects are being held at CPS NTUNGAMO
Today at around 1030/c Hon Rukutana and his guards intercepted a Motor vehicle UAQ 840X belonging to rival supporters who he had an argument with him before pulling out his gun and he started shooting at the motor vehicle injuring the occupants who are nursing injuries.
Kasasira also called for calm among the rival camps saying that police are in charge.
