As Nominations closed on the 16th of October 2020, people in Kabale  were  treated with shocking news that the UPC’s only Mp aspirant in Kigezi Sub region  Viola Nahabwe had decided to be nominated as an indipendent candidate.

Ms Viola was among the 22 aspirants nominated by the Kabale  District Returning Officer Hajji Ahmed Naduli Musisi to compete for the various seats of Member of Parliament .

Ms Viola contested as woman Mp representing the UPC in 2016 but she was defeated by the incumbent Kabale District Woman Mp  Hon Catheline Ndamira Atwakiire.

Until recently, Viola had been campaigning as a UPC Candidate and her campaign posters had a UPC symbol.

Meanwhile, Viola told our Reporter that she decided to avoid future court battles by shunning the Jimmy Akena headed  UPC which she claimed was nolonger the legal Political leadership of the party.

On 7th Sept. 2020,  the Court of appeal ruled that Akena had illegally been elected into office during the 2015 party primaries.

However Akena , vowed to continue serving as party president despite court nullifying his presidency until his current term of office expires in 2025.

Akena’s five-year term was renewed in August during a delegates conference.

In July, the Court of Appeal issued an interim order blocking UPC from conducting a National Delegates Conference that was slated for August 1 2020, where a new party president was going to be elected.  But Akena says the court order was served on 3rd August 2020 after the delegates conference.

The Akena UPC faction has since refused to vacate office and they are still recognised by the Electoral Commission.

It is on this note that Ms Viola decides to distance her candidature from the UPC. She said she could not seek endorsement from the current UPC leadership since Akena’s stamp is disputable.

However,  we reached the Kigezi Sub region UPC Vice Chairperson Sam Tindimwebwa Kanyamukiza for a comment. He said there was nothing to argue about Jimmy Akena’s leadership. He said that the fact that court has not issued an eviction order to the Akena’s leadership from the head Offices at Uganda House, he  remains the legal President of the UPC.

Mr. Sam has the UPC stamp for endorsing all the Party flag bearers in the Kigezi sub region. He alleged that Ms Viola developed misunderstandings with  Akena’s  leadership and that’s why she decised to stand as an independent .

According to Mr. Tindimwebwa, UPC has so far fielded 12 members who have been  nominated to aspire for different Electoral positions in Kabale District. Himself is contesting to be the Mayor Kabale Municipality.
