Journalist sued for defaming LC5 Chairperson

Mugisha Gilbert Karengye a radio presenter with Endigyito radio has been taken to court by the current Ibanda district chairperson Mr Melekiades Kajwengye whose term of office is ending in May this year, for making defamatory statements while in his morning show program in the said radio station that runs daily from 6:00am to 10:00am.

 It is believed that according to court documents witnessed by our news reporter, during the morning show on 2nd February and 5th February this years, Karengye hosted some concerned citizens from Ibanda district who were making repeated accusations that the district chairman Mr Kajwengye and other district leaders including councilors connived to grab government forest reserve which is located within Ibanda municipality which government through parliament put a ban against selling or using forest reserves countrywide for environmental reasons.

While these concerned citizens were sued, Karengye was separately sued as well as the programme host. Mr Kajwengye tendered in his legal suit in the Ibanda chief magistrates court complaining that while Karengye hosted the concerned citizens, he personally contributed some statements also which were defamatory in nature.

 According to his lawyer Honorato Muhanguzi , Mr. Karengye is to appear in court next week on 14th April 8, 2021 to defend him.

His lawyer claims that Karengye was on 2nd February this year arrested after the radio programme by security forces and unlawfully imprisoned for more than the constitutional 48 hours. He says there is no single evidence to pin his client only that he is being harassed for political reasons.
