3 security guards held for shooting student of Kigezi High School

Three private security guards attached to Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) have been arrested for allegedly shooting a senior five student of Kigezi High school in Kabale district.

The suspects are Moses Murengezi ,23, Mathew Akatuhurira ,28, and Sulaiman Baryanazigu, 24.  They are accused of shooting Bright Akatukunda aged 19.   Elly Maate, police spokesperson for kigezi region told our reporter today that  Akatukunda was shot on 22nd this month at around 09; 00 pm.

Maate says that it all started during a fight erupted between security guards and senior six students over evening prep. Security guards were chasing senior six students from dormitories to classes to revise which students resisted.

In the process, angry students attacked Sirivano Bakawerayo, one of the private security guards who were off duty and injured him. Students also destroyed the room of Bakawerayo. It is when Murengezi, Akatuhurira and Baryanazigu who was on duty started shooting and injuring Akatukunda on both legs.

Maate says that both Akatukunda and Bakawerayo are admitted at Rugarama hospital. He also says that the suspects are being detained at Kabale central police station as investigations into the matter continue.

Abraham Akampurira, the school headteacher also declined to comment on the matter when contacted by our reporter on phone. The case is registered at Kabale central police station under file number KABALE CRB 348/2021.
