Police investigate Rwampara murder

Police in Rwampara district are investigating circumstances surrounding the death of a 68-year-old man.

The deceased has been identified as Alozious Bitakamanyirwe alias Uganda a resident of Buterere cell in Kibingo ward of Rweibogo-Kibingo town council.

Rwizi regional police spokesperson Samson Kasasira says that the the incident took place on the 17th of June 2021 when he was attacked and murdered by unknown people who were reportedly trying to steal his pigs.

Bitakamanyirwe was cut on the neck and died instantly and the matter was reported to police by a neighbor identified as Josephat Bakunda.

 Preliminary investigations indicate that the area has for long been rocked by wrangles stemming from a swamp that was communally owned with some of the locals reaching the extent of selling off what they described as their shares.

Police indicates that several cases had evolved from the usage of the swamp up recently when National Enviromental Management Authority moved in to evict all the encroachers.  

 This reportedly  caused hanger among the users who decided to attack homes of those that were pushing for the eviction including the deceased who has been the chairman of the committee working with ACCORD that was against the wetland encroachers.

Several homes have been attacked banana plantations cut down and  cattle cut to death.

Police have so far arrested two suspects in connection with the incident but their names have been withheld so that this does not jeopardize investigations.

Kasasira says that efforts are underway to have more suspects arrested.
