Kabale leaders challenged to jointly tackle mal-nutrition

Officials of Hunger Project Uganda, are calling for concerted efforts,
from members of the public and other stakeholders in Kabale district,
in the fight against Mal-nutrition and improve on access to clean
water and proper sanitation and hygiene.


The call was made today by the advocacy and communications officer,
Hunger Project Uganda, Viola Nayebare, while speaking at Kitumba sub
county headquarters, during a dialogue, dubbed “the Right to Grow
Independent System dialogue”, which was organized under the “Right to
grow program”. the dialogue was held under the theme: creating Food
systems that enable children to reach their full potential.


The “Right to grow program”, is a global program being implemented
several African countries, like Uganda Mali, South Sudan, Ethiopia
and Bukinafaso among others with funding from the Netherlands.

In Uganda,
the program is being implemented in 10 districts including Kamwenge,
Buliisa ,Kakumiro, Adjumani, Arua, Kikuube, Nwoya, Maracha, Bugweri
and Kabale
Nayebare said that the Right to Grow program, which is being
implemented in Kitumba and Kamuganguzi sub-counties is aimed at
ensuring that every child aged below 5years is well-nourished and can
access the WASH services like clean water, sanitation, and hygiene.


She added that the program, which is also advocacy in nature is
intended at bringing out voices of community members, so that the
issues affecting them that are related to Mal-nutrition and WASH
services are brought to light and worked on.

Research conducted between 2013-2015, indicated that 2.2 million
children approximately 29 percent of children aged 5years were
stunted, while in Kabale district, the prevalence of stunting among
children aged 6-59 months were high at 41.1%.


The Kabale district senior fisheries officer, Jennifer Twebaze, who is
foreseeing the project in the district, said that fight against
malnutrition requires concerted efforts.

She called on all
stakeholders in the district to join efforts so as to realize zero
malnutrition.
