Ntungamo roots for the revival of sanitation competitions in communities

Authorities in Ntungamo district are calling on the government to revive sanitation competitions in a bid to address health related diseases.

The authorities argue that the sanitation competitions would encourage the locals to improve on sanitation and ensure that they live in clean environment by engaging in practices like boiling cleaning water, clearing bushes around homes and having in place latrines among others.

The leaders who were attending the district water and sanitation coordination committee held at the district library expressed concern that the communities have relaxed and the situation may be worse with the onset of the rainy season

Majugu Mujibu the health inspector in charge of sanitation activities says that the basic sanitation practices were abandoned by communities in the district and public institutions which he says is very dangerous.

Mujibu adds that there is a challenge in communities where some sections of the population still practice open defecation

Ntungamo district education officer Peace Atamba called on parents to always engage children in basic hygienic practices while still young so that they grow when they are aware of the benefits and the challenges that they may face in case the practices are compromised.

Ntungamo district secretary for works Monica Kutamba revealed that sanitation is everyone’s responsibility and called for a collective responsibility towards ensuring that the community are free from diseases that result from poor sanitation.
