Ntungamo District has heightened surveillance following the outbreak of African Swine fever in the neighboring Rukiga district.

The outbreak was announced at the beginning of October 2021 in the Kamwezi sub-county which neighbors the sub-counties of Ngoma, Kayonza, Rubaare, Rwentobo-Rwahi town council, and Rubaare town councils where pork dealers and farmers usually buy pigs from Rukiga.

Ntungamo District Veterinary Officer Dr.Yaake Basulira says that the department has also warned farmers to desist from transporting their pigs to different places and also to report immediately to the authorities any animal that develops signs related to African swine fever.

He further cautioned the local authorities against laxity and urged them to work with technocrats in ensuring that the fever does not spread to their district.
