On Thursday, January 13, 2022, the High Court at Rukungiri, presided over by Justice Moses Kazibwe Kawumi, sentenced one Biryomumwaani Henry to 13 years in prison for rape.

Biryomumwaani Henry, a resident of Nyakarambi village, Ruyonza parish, Nyarushanje sub-county, Rukungiri district, was convicted of raping a mentally ill 28-year-old resident of the same area.

According to the prosecution, on December 11, 2018, Biryomumwaani broke into his victim’s home and forced her into sex, for which he pleaded guilty.

He pleaded for a lenient sentence, claiming he cares for his blind mother, and the presiding judge noted that he was HIV positive but did not infect his victim.

He was sentenced to 12 years in prison, but because he has already served three years on remand, he will only serve nine.
