The territorial police at Old Kampala are investigating a fire outbreak that took place on Friday afternoon at about 2 pm in Kakajjo Zone, Kisenyi.

The Police Directorate of Fire Prevention and Rescue Services, with the help of the residents, responded to the scene and managed to extinguish the fire before it spread to other parts of Kisenyi.

One person, identified as Godfrey Mukasa (50), a resident of the same area, was found dead during a search in the fire-affected area.

It has been established that Mukasa was seated with his friends when the fire started.

All his colleagues ran away, but Mukasa was unable to flee the scene because he had disabilities.

His body was found later in a burnt building.

Kampala metropolitan deputy police spokesperson Luke Owoyesigyire says that the body has been conveyed to the city mortuary in Mulago for a post-mortem.

The team has also established that over 80 stores that deal in grain, grinding machines, and fridges were destroyed by the fire.

The investigative teams have picked up samples from the scene to establish the cause of the fire.

Owoyesigyire adds that the scene is being guarded by the police to prevent the theft of property recovered from the structures that were gutted by fire.
