The Rubanda district Woman Member of Parliament and also the commissioner of Parliament, Prosy Akampurira Begumisa Mbabazi, on Monday, handed over 50 piglets to 12 village women groups from Muko and Hamurwa Sub Counties, Rubanda and Hamurwa town councils in Rubanda as part of improving their household income.

Flagging off the distribution of the piglets to the beneficiaries at Rubanda district’s Rukiiko hall compound, Akampurira said that she lobbied for the piglets from the National Agricultural Advisory Services (NAADS) Secretariat, following several requests from women who asked her to lobby for an animal they could graze at their respective homes.

She added that she lobbied for 100 piglets, including the 50 that were distributed recently, and each group received four piglets. Akampurira said that the piglets are to benefit all the group members when they produce them by sharing the produced piglets. She added that the piglets would help to improve the welfare and household incomes of the beneficiaries, in addition to the Parish Development Model, both intended to improve household income.

The Rubanda District Veterinary Officer, Dr. Dismus Baterana, confirmed that the piglets were brought healthy. He, therefore, asked the beneficiaries to embrace zero-grazing of the piglets as well as construct pigsties to avoid the risks of getting animal diseases. He advised them to use the extension workers to treat the animals.

The beneficiaries, including Annah Mwesigye and Silvia Akankwasa, commended the legislator for lobbying, hoping that once the piglets grow and produce, they will get school fees for their children and also get manure for their crops.
