Kabale district health department has today received a total of 24 solar-powered vaccine fridges from the Ministry of Health, in order to help in boosting vaccination services in the district.
The Acting Kabale District Health Officer Alfred Besigensi told our reporter while at the DHO’s office in Makanga after offloading them that the fridges were purchased by the Ministry with support from Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunization (GAVI) to help in storing vaccines in the respective Health facilities.
Besigensi said that before receiving the 24 solar-powered fridges, health workers from Health center IIs have been facing the challenge of traveling long distances to health center IIIs, IVs, and times to district vaccine store to pick the vaccines to carryout vaccination outreaches which have been tiresome and costly. He further added that the vaccine fridges will be put in different Health centers without them.
He is optimistic that the fridges will increase the potency of the vaccines in the provision and protect children who have been at risk of acquiring immunizable diseases like polio and measles, asking parents to embrace exercises of vaccinating children since services will be nearer at the respective health facilities.
