Ministry of Health officials have called on the public to get vaccinated for Hepatitis B after it has been discovered to be a silent leading killer disease.

During a media sensitization meeting for Kisoro journalists held at the Miami hotel on Monday, Dr. Anule Umar said Hepatitis B is now killing more Ugandans than malaria.

Anule explained that Hepatitis B is a viral disease that does not have any cure, but it can be prevented by taking a vaccine, which is given in three phases.

He noted that the country is experiencing a rise in Hepatitis B cases, some of which are alcohol-induced, which lead to liver cirrhosis and liver cancer-causing death, while other common causes are from mother to child during delivery.

He said Kisoro residents need to utilize the services because the vaccines are in the district but might expire because people do not have access to them. Anule stressed that all Hepatitis B vaccines are free of charge in any health facility nationwide.
