Driver on the run after Kanungu fatal accident

Police in Kanungu district are hunting for the driver of the vehicle that was involved in an accident that left one occupant dead and two injured along the Nyamirama-Ishasha road.

The deceased has been identified as Stuart Owomugisha, age 16, a casual laborer and resident of Kaloni Village, Western Ward, Nyamirama Town Council, Kanungu district, while the particulars of the other two victims are not yet known.

According to Elly Maate, the Kigezi region police spokesperson, the motor vehicle, an Isuzu Elfu with registration number UBH 646D that was loaded with timber and driven by an unidentified driver, failed to negotiate a sharp corner at Kaloni along the Nyamirama Ishasha road and overturned, killing Owomugisha on the spot and injuring two other passengers on board.

Maate added that police were notified and found the overturned vehicle at the scene along with the victims, but the driver had already escaped.

He said that the two victims were taken to Nyamirama Health Center IV for treatment, while the body of Owomugisha was taken to the mortuary of the same health facility for a postmortem, and the motor vehicle was towed to the Nyamirama police station pending inspection by the Inspector of Vehicles as the hunt for the driver continues.
