Police in Rubanda are investigating the circumstances under which 91 people fell sick after eating food at a burial.

As reported by Reuben Ahimbisibwe, the area is chairperson of Kitahurira cell, Kashasha parish, and Nkumba subcounty in Rubanda district.

Kigezi regional police Spokesperson Elly Maate says that it is  alleged that on January 6, 2023, at around 1500 hours, about 91 people fell ill at the burial at the home of late Katuro Samuel in Kitahurira cell, Kashasha parish, Nkumba subcounty, Rubanda district.

The cause of the illness was unknown, but there was suspicion that they had been poisoned.

Maate adds that the police, together with the health team, responded and conveyed the victims to various health centers in Muko, Kitahurira, Ikumba, and Kyiizi, where they got first aid, improved, and were being discharged.

The medical report says that the patients were infected with a bacteria they probably got from poorly prepared food, not poison.
