The territorial police of Rubanda are hunting for a suspect who allegedly assaulted a 60-year-old man, Erinest Kangwagye, a carpenter resident of Muruhita village, Kakore parish, and Hamurwa sub county, and died weeks later.
The suspect is one Moses Barigye, aka Mugisha, 32, a resident of the same address, who is alleged to have hit the deceased mistakenly with a hoe when he intended to hit a different person with whom they had developed a quarrel.
Kigezi regional police Spokesperson Elly Maate says that it’s alleged that on January 6, 2023, at around 2030 hours, in Muruhita village, the suspect developed a quarrel with Turyakira John Bosco while in the bar of Mubangizi Pracaripo, where the deceased was also taking booze, and in due course the suspect moved out of the bar as Kangwagye, the deceased, now also followed him with the intention of cooling him.
Unfortunately, when they reached out, he suddenly hit the deceased with a hoe on the back of the head, causing a deep cut, thinking that he was hitting John Bosco.
He further revealed: The police were alerted, the scene was visited, and the suspect was arrested on grievous harm charges. The victim was rushed to Rugarama hospital, where he was referred to Mbarara hospital, where he succumbed to that injury on February 5, 2023.
During the course of the investigation, while the case file was at RSA’s office in Kabale, the suspect was released on police bond and is now on the run after learning of the death of the victim.
Efforts are being made to have him arrested to face charges of murder.
