Kabale man kills biological mother over allegations of witchcraft

Police in Kabale have arrested a man for the alleged murder of her 50-year-old biological mother.

The suspect is one Benon Tumwesigye, a male adult resident of Hakabungo cell Mukalange ward Katuna town council, who is alleged to have hit the mother with a hoe on the head, one Provia Busingye, a Rwandan national of the same address.

Kigezi regional police Spokesperson Elly Maate says that it’s alleged that the suspect divorced his wife, and the wife went back to her parent’s home in Rwanda while pregnant.

Maate further revealed that on May 2, 2023, she produced a dead child, after which the suspect started accusing his own mother of having bewitched the wife to produce that dead child.

On February 6, 2023, at around 2:00 a.m., while the deceased, her other daughter, the suspect, and others were at home preparing to go for the burial of the said child in Rwanda, he attacked the deceased, thereby hitting her with a hoe on the head several times and killing her instantly.

The police at Katuna police station were notified, and the scene was visited this morning by the Kabale team and documented.

exhibits of two hoes with suspected blood stains recovered at the crime scene; bodies retrieved and taken to the Kabale referral hospital mortuary for postmortem.

The suspect was arrested, and inquiries are ongoing.
