Despite coming from humble families, this did not deter Brian Abaho and Blessed Twinomujuni from excelling in last year’s Uganda Certificate of Education examinations.

Blessed Twinomujuni emerged as the best student at the school with an aggregate of 10 in 8, closely followed by Brian Abaho with an aggregate of 12 in 8.

The two students, who all hail from Kanungu district, have been surviving on the support of the school for school fees.

Brian Abaho told our reporter that after getting admission to senior one, he was only asked by the school to contribute 120,000 shillings as part of his school fees but could raise the money.

Brian says that he would have dropped out of school if it had not been for the intervention of the school administration, which gave him a chance to study and always stay at school during the holidays to work for his fees.

Hailing from Rugyeyo village in Kamakoma parish in Kinaba sub-county of Kanungu district, he says that his journey was not an easy one, but the school has been there for him.

Brian, a son of Alex Twinomugisha and Christine Kyomuhangi in the deep village of Kanungu, says that with the support from the school, he felt that it would be bad for him not to perform well and had to put in extra efforts, which have paid off.

Brian, the third born in a family of six, says that the affairs way back at his home keep him going with the hope of turning around the situation once he is through school.

He hopes to take biology, chemistry, and mathematics at an advanced level, although he is not yet certain of what will happen next.

His secrets are closeness to teachers, collaboration with peers, and a fear of God. He says, however, that he is struggling, especially when it comes to getting scholastic materials as he spends his holidays at school.

Elly Turyasiima is the head teacher at Nyabikoni secondary school in Kabale Municipality. He says that Brian’s performance was not a surprise, and they are proud of him.

He further revealed that Brian has been a good and reliable student who has been active in the school chapel as an altar server.

He says that the school’s general performance has been improving every other year, saying that this year they had 54 students in Division 1, compared to 40 in Division 1 for the year 2021.

Scholastica Kyomugisha, the director at Nyabikoni Secondary, says that the school has always supported needy students to ensure that they achieve their potential.

She says that the trend indicates that discipline is very vital for the realization of good results since all the best performers have been good students all along.
