Cyprus Scholarship Fund, a Greece-based non-government organization, has donated school supplies worth 15 million shillings to 20 learners who completed primary school level at Bufuka Primary School in Kakomo Parish, Kitumba Sub County, Kabale District in the academic year 2022 as a way of motivating them to stay in school.

The items each learner received included a mattress, blanket, metallic case, 12 counter books, pens, a rim of papers, stockings, sanitary pads, a full uniform, and 250,000 shillings as tuition for the first academic term. Handing over the items to parents and learners at Bufuka primary school on Sunday (today), Zadock Tumuhimbise, the school head teacher who is also the Unda Nationals Teachers Union (UNATU) National Chairman, says that the success of the funding came from the lobbying the school administration and parents did so that learners don’t drop out after completing the primary level.

According to Tumuhimbise, because the benefiting learners hail from humble families, they will join senior ones as borders at the nearby Kakomo secondary school, where they can be easily checked on by their parents when needed without incurring transport costs. Tumuhimbise also says that the donation is aimed at encouraging other learners in lower classes to also work hard.

Dan Namara, the chairperson of the School Management Committee, hailed the funders for considering raising the education standard of the learners in the area. According to Namara, such a donation is an eye-opener for parents to also contribute funds to improve academic standards at school.

The school currently has an enrollment of 210 learners. Out of 22 learners who completed 2022 Primary Leaving Examinations (PLE) results at the school, one came in first grade with 11 aggregates, 11 in division two, 7 in division three, and two have decided to repeat the class after failing with division U.
