Student killed in Ntungamo school fire

Police in Ntungamo District are investigating the circumstances under which one block containing two male dormitories caught fire at around 2100 c, killing one student, Atukwatse Bonus, 16 years old, and injuring three others, Marvin Nuwenyesiga, Isaiah Ajjuna, and Amanya Lisbon, who were rushed to Ntungamo Family Care Hospital for treatment.

The block houses 146 students in Senior One, whose property worth millions was destroyed, including books, suitcases, mattresses, and clothes.

Samson Kasasira, the Rwizi regional police spokeswoman, says that fire and rescue services responded and were able to contain the fire, stopping it from spreading to other buildings.

He further revealed that the body of the deceased student was taken to the Itojo Hospital Mortuary, where it is awaiting postmortem.

According to preliminary findings, it’s suspected arson caused by the use of gasoline by unknown persons.

Ntungamo district chairperson Samuel Muchunguzi revealed that the incident is unfortunate and urged security to follow up the matter to its logical conclusion.
