Muhanga TC Sorghum dealers protest relocation

Women dealing in sorghum along Muhanga-Mbarara Road in Muhanga town council Rukiga district have strongly opposed Muhanga town council’s future plans to have them relocated to Ruhonwa cell Butare ward Muhanga town council in an improved and modernized sorghum pond as a way of improving sanitation and quality of the porridge produced within the town council.

The Muhanga Town Council Mayor, Eng. Tumwijukye James, revealed this on April 25, 2023, during the distribution of 75 tarpaulins worth 3,750,000 to women dealing in sorghum processing in Muhanga Town Council by the Rukiga Woman MP, Hon. Kamusiime Caroline Muhwezi.

The mayor said that they are not chasing them away, but they want to improve the quality of the local porridge produced by these women.

“We have good intentions for your business, but we are not letting it down, as some of you may say,” he added.

The mayor further warned them against drying their sorghum in the pedestrian’s lane, saying that this has caused road accidents for the pedestrians who are trying not to step in and end up being knocked down by the vehicles.

Efforts to get a comment from the town clerk of Muhanga Town Council in Rukiga district, Mrs. Eudia Mutabazi, were all vain as she could not pick up our endless calls.

The sorghum processors along Muhanga Mbarara Road in Muhanga Town Council, led by Moreen Ewenamanya, Doreen Nsasiibwe, and Evas Bushari, said that they want to stay on their stream, saying that it’s where their stores and rentals are, and relocating to Ruhonwa would incur a lot of costs for them.

They added that it is difficult for one to get a store in Ruhonwa Cell and a compound where they can dry their sorghum.

They also pointed out the insecurity of their sorghum if brought into one sorghum pond.

The vendors challenged the mayor to work on the sanitation in Muhanga Town Council rather than relocating them to Ruhonwa. Saying that most of the landlords do empty their toilets in the stream.

On July 30, 2022, the locals in Rwabahanzi cell, Central Ward Muhanga Town, Rukiga district, went wild on their fellows who had allegedly emptied their toilet contents into a stream and into a neighbor’s compound.

The accused were Mr. Charles Katuramu, a retired police officer (O.C.), and a businessman only identified as Herbert residents of the above address.

Charles Katuramu reportedly hired men to empty toilets at his bar and lodge restaurant in Rwabahanzi cell along Kabale Mbarara highway on July 30th, around 10 p.m., using the Jerricans.
