Three killed in Rukungiri floods

On April 29, 3023, at about 1400 hrs, the District CID Rukungiri, SOCO, and team booked out on information about a drowning incident at River Rushaya Kagorogoro village, Bwambara parish, Bwambara sub-county, Rukungiri district.

Kigezi regional police spokesperson Elly Maate says that upon reaching the scene, it’s alleged that on April 29, 2023, at about 7:00 a.m., a group of people, namely Ngabirano Edson, Kyabasasi Bonny, Birungi Arthur alias Kasingye Maria, Ahereza Brian, Turyasingura, Tibamwenda, Bukoko, Boy, Kadunguyu, and Kabale, were brewing local ‘waragi’ at the river bank of the Rushayayayayaya.

During the brewing process, the river flooded beyond its banks up to people’s plantations and gardens, approximately 50 meters from its original paths of flow known to the locals.

The victims were surrounded by the increasing high-speed flooding.
leading them to start running for their lives, where 07 managed to cross the water while 03 drowned to death.

The deceased have been identified as Edison Ngabirano, a male aged 30 years, a Mukiga casual worker, a resident of Kagorogoro village, Bwambara parish, Bwambara sub-county, Rukungiri district,Kyabasasi Bonny, a female adult aged 64 years, a Mukiga peasant, a resident of the same address, and one Kabare, still missing in the river waters.

The survivors are:Birungi Arthur, alias Kasingye Maria; Ahereza Brian; Turyasingura; Tibamwenda; Bukoko; Boy; and Kadungunyu.

Maate further revealed that the scene was visited and documented.Elevating information was obtained from local leaders and the relatives of the deceased and survivors.
Two bodies were retrieved, identified with the help of the locals, and handed over to their families for burial.
Efforts to find the missing body of oneKabare is underway.
