The Environmental Shield, a non-profit civic organization, has petitioned the National Environmental Management Authority over continued encroachment on wetlands and water bodies in and around Kampala.

In a letter dated May 8, 2023, authored by the organization’s chief executive officer, Kiiza Eron, and addressed to the executive director of NEMA, the organization calls for immediate action against encroachers in Busabala-Wakiso district, Mulungu Beach in Munyonyo-Kampala, and Kitezi-Kawempe division.

Kiiza reveals that the encroachment on wetlands threatens human and ecological health, which he reveals is an attack on the environment and a threat to Uganda’s right to a clean and healthy environment.

Kiiza argues that the attack on wetlands has persisted for years and must be brought to a halt.

In the letter seen by our reporter, Kiiza is calling for a stop to the encroachment and deforestation of the wetland in Busabala, Wakiso district, Mulungu Beach in Munyonyo, Kampala, and Kitezi Kawempe division in Kampala.

The organization demands immediate action be taken against the culprits, including the eviction of encroachers and restoration of the degraded wetlands.
