Kabale University Launches Institute of Tourism and Hospitality.

By APN Reporter

Kabale University has taken a significant step towards promoting the tourism and hospitality sector in Uganda with the launch of its Institute of Tourism and Hospitality. Spearheading this initiative is Dr. Christine Ampumuza, a specialist in tourism and hospitality, who also serves as the Head of Tourism and Hospitality at the university. The establishment of this institute aims to address the challenges faced by the industry and bring tourism closer to local communities, particularly those residing in tourism-rich destinations.

One of the main goals of the Institute is to develop a skilled workforce that is well-aligned with the needs of the industry. By doing so, it aims to reduce the dependency on imported labor from neighboring countries, which has hindered the growth of the tourism sector in Uganda. Often, imported workers lack familiarity with the available tourism resources, which hampers the quick development of the industry.

Strategically located in a region rich in tourism destinations, the Institute aspires to become a Center of Excellence within the Great Lakes Region. It recently conducted assessments in key tourism destinations across Uganda, including Wanale, Murchison Falls, Kibale National Park, and Queen Elizabeth National Park. The findings revealed that local communities in these areas lacked empowerment to tap into their rich tourism potentials fully. The Institute aims to bridge this gap by offering academic programs and practical training that will empower communities and improve their livelihoods.

Dr. Ampumuza emphasized the importance of knowledge dissemination and capacity building within the tourism industry, with a special focus on the local communities hosting tourism sites. The lack of awareness of the benefits of tourism among the wider population can lead to inequitable distribution of its advantages. By providing proper training and education, the university aims to equip individuals within the industry, including the communities, with the necessary skills and understanding to maximize the benefits of tourism.

The Institute currently offers five academic programs, including a Master’s in Tourism and Hospitality, Bachelor’s in Tourism and Hospitality Management, Bachelor of Catering and Hospitality, Diploma in Tourism and Hospitality Management, and Diploma in Hotel Management. These programs aim to combine practical, tutorial, and interactive lecture sessions to develop students’ skills and orientation towards the tourism and hospitality industry.

Furthermore, the university’s strategic location allows students to take advantage of the natural learning sites within its proximity, providing opportunities for hands-on practical experience. The Institute has already established partnerships with various organizations and companies within the tourism sector for practical sessions and internships, enhancing students’ exposure and real-world experience.

Uganda’s tourism and hospitality industry already contribute significantly to the country’s GDP and employment. With the continued growth of the sector, as outlined in the National Development Plan and Vision 2040, the Ugandan government recognizes tourism as a key driver of transformation and economic prosperity.

As the Institute of Tourism and Hospitality at Kabale University takes flight, it holds great promise for fostering a more inclusive and responsible tourism industry that benefits both the country’s economy and the livelihoods of local communities. With a focus on experiential learning, creativity, and innovation, the Institute is poised to become a leading center for tourism and hospitality education in Uganda. Moreover, collaborations with national and international bodies will further bolster the industry’s growth and development.
