The territorial police of Rukungiri have apprehended a 40-year-old man on suspicion of murdering his 39-year-old nephew.

The alleged perpetrator, identified as Apollo Niwenyesiga Kabududu, hails from Nyakabare cell, Central Ward, Kebisoni Town Council, Rukungiri district. He stands accused of using a hoe to inflict fatal injuries on his nephew, Darius Turyamwijuka, who also resided in the same area.

Kigezi regional police spokesperson Elly Maate says that the incident occurred on the evening of October 31, 2023, at approximately 19:00 hours in Nyakabare cell. Darius Turyamwijuka, who was under the influence of alcohol, returned to his residence and found himself in a heated confrontation with his uncle, Apollo Niwenyesiga Kabududu.

The disagreement escalated as the two relatives engaged in a physical altercation. The deceased, out of anger, assaulted his uncle with a stick, striking him twice. In response, Kabududu, seemingly driven by anger, grabbed a nearby hoe and attacked Turyamwijuka multiple times, targeting his head and back, ultimately leading to his untimely demise.

Maate says that the horrifying incident was witnessed by a young child, Ainemani Franklin, aged 5, who was present at the scene.

The child’s cries drew the attention of Edson Kabyesiza, who rushed to the location only to discover Darius Turyamwijuka’s lifeless body lying in a pool of blood.

Edson immediately alerted the area chairperson, Katamba Richard, who promptly reported the matter to the Kebisoni Police Station.

Maate adds that police responded to the scene, gathering evidence and collecting the alleged murder weapon, a bloodstained hoe. Apollo Niwenyesiga Kabududu was taken into custody and is currently detained at the Central Police Station (CPS) in Rukungiri.

Meanwhile, the body of the deceased has been transported to the Rwakabengo Health Center III mortuary to undergo a postmortem examination. The investigation into this tragic incident is ongoing, and authorities are committed to bringing justice to the victim and his grieving family.

Maate calls on the communities to always embrace peaceful conflict resolution and mediation to prevent such senseless violence.
