Police in Rukiga have apprehended two individuals for questioning in relation to the mysterious death of 40-year-old Martin Tumwekwase, a resident of Kasoni cell in Rwenyangi Parish, Kamwezi sub-county, Rukiga district. The arrests were made following a report by Bonnie Tugumisirize, the area chairperson of Kasoni Cell.
The suspects, identified as Guston Asiimwe and Ruth Aharizira, both residing in Kasoni cells, were taken into custody as part of the ongoing investigation into Tumwekwase’s demise. The deceased was reportedly last seen on the evening of November 11, 2023, at around 21:00 hrs. at a local bar named Didas, accompanied by both suspects. The trio left the bar together, heading towards their respective homes.
Martin Tumwekwase, formerly married to Ruth Aharizira, had been living in Kamwezi Trading Centre, while the estranged wife had rented a residence in Omurutare Cell. The circumstances surrounding their separation remain unclear at this time.
The alarm was raised when Tugumisirize discovered Tumwekwase’s lifeless body at his residence the following morning. Subsequently, the police were alerted, and officers, including the Officer in Charge of Criminal Investigations (OC CID), the District Police Commander (DPC), and the Regional Scene of Crime Officer (SOCO), swiftly responded to the scene.
A thorough investigation ensued, with law enforcement officials meticulously documenting and processing the crime scene. The postmortem examination was carried out at Kamwezi Health Centre IV, and preliminary findings indicated suspicious circumstances surrounding Tumwekwase’s death.
Elly Maate, the Kigezi regional police spokesperson, issued a statement on the matter, confirming the arrests and the ongoing investigation. Maate urged the public to remain calm and assured them that the police were committed to ensuring a thorough and transparent inquiry into the incident.
“The Rukiga Police have arrested Guston Asiimwe and Ruth Aharizira for questioning in connection with the death of Martin Tumwekwase. We are treating this case with the utmost seriousness, and our investigators are working diligently to unravel the circumstances surrounding the incident,” stated Maate.
The motive behind Tumwekwase’s death and the role, if any, played by the suspects in this tragedy are yet to be determined as the investigation progresses. The community awaits further updates from the police as they seek justice for the untimely loss of one of their own.
