Deadly Attack and Robbery Unfold in Kamwenge District

In a shocking incident that unfolded in the early hours of December 19th, 2023, in Kyitehurizi village, Kyabandara parish, Kamwenge sub-county, Kamwenge District, unknown assailants armed with SMG rifles attacked and burned four individuals to death. The victims include Ayebare Jenasta, a 40-year-old former councilor from Kyabandara parish, and three others identified as Banyazaki Magret (60), Tugume (25), and two unidentified individuals.

The gruesome incident occurred at approximately 2:00 a.m. in Kyitehurizi village, a trading center near Kibale National Park.

The assailants, numbering around ten, carried out the attack before proceeding to loot a store owned by Baguma Richard, a 35-year-old resident of the same area.

Baguma Richard’s store was ransacked, and the assailants made off with 300 kg of beans, a sack of Irish potatoes, three trays of eggs, and 50 kg of maize. In addition to the robbery, the attackers set ablaze a motorcycle with registration number UFC 851T before fleeing towards Kibale National Park. Witnesses reported that the assailants were conversing in both Lufumbira and Rwandese.

The Kamwenge Police Station received the report of the incident at 02:34 hrs on the same day. Promptly, law enforcement authorities, including the police and UPDF personnel commanded by Col. Nabimanya Saul, mobilized to the scene of the crime.

Upon reaching the location, the police cordoned off the area, and canine units were deployed to track the assailants who had escaped into the national park. The investigation is ongoing, and authorities have promised to provide further details as they progress with the tracking operation.

The motive behind the attack and the identities of the assailants remain unknown at this time. The community is left in shock and mourning as law enforcement intensifies efforts to bring those responsible to justice.
