Two people died on Thursday after being hit by landlslides at a sand quarry in Kanungu district.
The dead have been identified as Mugarura Anaklet, a male aged 20 years, a peasant of Kanyamisinga village in Nyakishojwa Parish, Katete Sub County, Kanungu District, and Niwamanya Barnet (31) a peasant of Kiijanga village in Rutugunda Parish, Kirima Sub County, Kanungu District.
Kigezi regional police spokesperson Elly Maate says that on February 8, 2024, at around 1500 hrs, at a sand quarry located at Kanyamisinga LC1, Nyakishojwa Parish, Katete Sub County, Kanungu District, the two deceased were loading sand on the tipper truck when the sand slid and burried them alive as they attempted to escape.
He adds that they were suffocated to death despite attempts to rescue them.
He further explained that the bodies were retrieved and sent to the Kambuga Hospital mortuary for a postmortem, and the sand quarry was closed.
