57% of children in Kigezi living below the poverty line

The National Children Authority -NCA has revealed that 57% of children in the Kigezi region are living in Poverty.

Martin Kasagara Kiiza, the Executive Director of the Authority say that they have recorded findings of state of Uganda’s children which indicates that Kigezi sub region is leading in western Uganda with 57%   41% in Bunyoro, 47% Tooro and 37% Ankole region.

Kiiza who was speaking at who was speaking at a one-day sensitization workshop for the media held at Kirigime guest house in Kabale municipality on Friday revealed that the media play a vital role in reporting about issues affecting children as well as protecting their rights.

 The training organized by National Children’s Authority in Kigezi Region Workshop focused on equipping the journalists with skills to enable them advocate for child Rights.

Kiiza added that Child Poverty is caused by lack of basic needs for standing, inadequate shelter, lack of food, of health care and lack of education among others which requires clear interventions.

He added that for Children to avoid this child poverty, they must have their rights protected such as the right to have access to education, right to attend health services among others.

 The training attracted journalists, district leaders among other stakeholders.
