Kabale man on the run after battering his expectant wife

Authorities in Rubaya sub county –Kabale district are hunting Brian Niwagaba (43) for battering her pregnant wife Dinah.

The suspect is said to have committed the crime on the 27th of July, 2021.

Trouble started when Brian approached the wife demanding for the wife to give him five kilograms of beans to be sold for alcohol which was turned down.

The move angered Brian who resorted to beating up his wife who was later rushed to Kabale regional referral hospital where she had miss courage.

Dina was expecting a set of twins.  The victim who is a member of the Biringo women development association a rural women group that was established in 2014 for development says that the husband had turned it into a daily practice to sale off the family’s harvest and spend it on useless ventures such as drinking alcohol.

She says that this time, she decided to stand firm and say no to the move which she says has seen her lose his set of twins.

According to the chairperson of Biringo women’s development association   Flavia Tumusiime, the cases of domestic violence especially targeting women which has become the order of the day.

She says that the situation escalated with the COVID-19 lockdown with now men spending more time at home with their families.

Flavia says that at least 3 out of 10 women are severely beaten up by their husbands on a daily basis.

Biringo women association members are the breadwinners of their families as most husbands have no responsibility because many are alcoholics with no support to the family.

Another woman only identified as Barbara is also nursing injuries after being beaten by her husband.

A police officer attached to the family protection unity of Kabale central police station told our reporter that the cases of domestic violence has doubled during the COVID-19 Lockdown that started on the 10th of July 2021.
