Two killed in Mbarara gas explosion

Two people were on Tuesday killed in a gas explosion in Mbarara city.

The incident occurred at a metal workshop in Kisenyi , Kakooba division after a gas cylinder that was being cut open instead exploded killing two and injuring five others.

Rwizi regional police spokesperson Samson Kasasira says that the explosion was sparked off by scrap collectors who were trying to cut open a gas cylinder triggering off the explosion that claimed lives and damaged property due to the fragments that were dislodged from the gas cylinder.

The deceased have been identified as Hussein Kasozi  (19) and Baker Kasinde (30).

The injured include Gashom Kamusiime  ,Emmanuel Nsabimana Emmanuel (28)  in critical condition, Eunice Komujuni with a burnt face,Mugisha Ssentongo (7) and John  Tumwebaze (44). Tumwebaze also doubles as the owner of the workshop.

 Kasasira says that the injured are receiving treatment at Mbarara regional referral hospital.

The scene of the explosion was examined by a bomb expert, visited by scenes of crime officers and a homicide team from the criminal investigations department at CPS Mbarara to manage the scene

Police were also able to collect samples of the fragments dislodged from the exploded gas cylinder and also recovered two more gas cylinders from the workshop which are exhibited at central police station  Mbarara.
