The Rubanda District Woman MP, Akampurira Mbabazi Prossy, has raised an alarm about the growing habit of food poisoning in the district.

Akampurira Mbabazi Prossy, the 11th Parliament’s Commissioner, revealed this on Sunday at the conclusion of the 4-day annual brethren conference, which was held at the convention site in Rugarama Kabale municipality.

Akampurira’s warning follows a scenario in which over 91 mourners were hospitalized on January 6, 2023, following suspected food poisoning at the burial of late Katuro Samuel in Kitahurira cell, Kashasha parish, Nkumba sub-county, Rubanda District.

Elly Maate, the spokesperson for the kigezi regional police, told journalists that police, along with the health team, responded and transported the victims to various health centers in Muko, Kitahurira, Lkumba, and Kyiizi, where they received first aid and were later discharged if they showed signs of improvement.

A statement of a suspected food poisoning incident was entered at the Rubanda Police Station under reference number GEF: 001/2023.

However, on January 12, security personnel from the district detained four suspects at Rubanda Police Station: Regina Orishaba, Groli Kyarimpa, Juliet Kyomukama, and Hodira Muramye, all residents of Kashasha Parish, Ikumba Sub-County, Rubanda district.

The commissioner of parliament rooted the spirit of love and unity among the locals in the district, saying that it’s the right time for parents to sit down with their children and advise them accordingly.

According to Rubanda Resident District Commissioner Lilian Ruteraho, the arrested suspects are helping in the investigation of why they were seen in the kitchen before the incident yet they were not on the official team that was responsible for cooking.
